Methane/Natural Gas

The all new Honeywell HF500 Natural Gas Detector

Natural gas (also known as methane) is used in homes for cooking, heating and water heating.

Why Natural Gas can be dangerous

Although it is a clean, efficient and relatively safe gas it can cause carbon monoxide poisoning (see sources of CO gas on this website) and when a gas leak occurs a small spark from simply turning on a light switch can cause a fire (as natural gas is highly flammable) or create an explosion.

Gas leaks commonly occur as a result of:

  • appliances not being hooked up correctly
  • forgetting to light a gas ring
  • a pilot light blowing out
  • wear and tear of gas heaters and cooking appliances

Natural gas in its natural state is odourless and is the reason why gas companies add a chemical, to the gas called mercaptan (which gives it its distinctive “rotten eggs” smell) to make it easier to detect leaks.

Natural gas detectors are recommended for the elderly as they often have an impaired sense of smell. Other people at risk from gas leaks include people who suffer from memory/confusion issues. Properties left unattended for considerable periods of time are also at potential risk.

Natural Gas Exposure Symptoms

An individual can begin to feel dizzy and experience headaches, fatigue and nausea. Natural gas contains no oxygen and the lack of oxygen to the brain and body can after prolonged exposure lead to difficulties in breathing and loss of consciousness and even death.

If you suspect a natural gas leak, follow these steps:

  • Do not use an open flame, matches or lighters or turn on any electrical switches.
  • Do put out flames, open doors and windows, keep people away from the area and turn the gas off at the control valve.
  • Call the National Gas emergency number on 0800 111 999
